Hutch Kugeman is the new head brewer at the Brooklyn Brewery at the CIA

We are proud to announce that award-winning brewer and brewmaster Hutch Kugeman has joined us as Head Brewer at Brooklyn Brewery at the Culinary Institute of America. He is already hard at work, instructing students in the “Art and Science of Brewing” course and brews for the restaurants and student commons on the CIA campus. While working closely with Brewmaster Garrett Oliver and the faculty at the CIA, Hutch will be an indispensable part of educating upcoming chefs on beer’s importance at the table.

Hutch comes to the CIA brewhouse after years of creating highly respected beers all over the country. From his first position brewing at Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City, Oregon, he traveled to Great Adirondack Brewing in Lake Placid, New York, where he became brewmaster in 2004. While brewmaster, Hutch received numerous awards from the Great American Beer Festival, World Beer Cup, North American Beer Awards, and the TAP NY Festival.

After a spell at Ithaca Brewing Company, Hutch moved to Crossroads Brewing in Athens, New York as the founding brewer. His work there earned him a World Beer Cup Gold Award, Silver and Bronze GABF medals, the Matthew Vassar Cup for Best Brewery in the Hudson Valley, and several more TAP NY awards. We are excited to have Hutch bring his career to the classroom with us, and we’re excited to see what his students churn out from the gleaming brewhouse at the CIA.
