Back in October, Defender illustrator Khary Randolph visited Orbital Comics to join in conversation with Orbital in Conversation host Chris Thompson, Broken Frontier Editor in Chief Andy Oliver, and Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Deputy Director Alex Cox. The conversation, fueled by a respectable amount of Defender IPA (of course), was fortunately recorded for the Orbital in Conversation podcast and is a must for any fan of beer, comics, or creativity in general.
Hearing each of the panelists trace their steps from their first drugstore comics through their professional lives is funny and nostalgia-inducing for any listener. Khary also gives new insight into the creation of this year’s Defender character, describing how he “finally” added a cape because it seemed to be what we wanted (it totally was, and it was love at first sight on our end…sorry, Khary!) It was also remarkable to see the conflicts facing comics today, from the censorship battled by the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund to the shifting demographics of comic fans in general.
You can catch the podcast right here, or subscribe to Orbital in Conversation on iTunes and find episode 155. Don’t forget to crack a Defender IPA while you’re listening– it’s the perfect pairing.
