The brewers at Nya Carnegie had an idea for a brawny-yet-approachable American strong ale. But what to call it? They cast their minds around and realized the answer was in, of all things, the email signatures of their colleague Roger. Roger tends to end his emails with “Fridens,” which roughly translates to “peace be with you.” Armed with a name as assertive, approachable, and bold as the recipe, they set out to brew the new beer.
The new Fridens Ale is a smooth, strong, hop-laden treat, bursting with Willamette, Cascade, Bravo and Amarillo hops and a bawdy-but-refined malt to keep things from getting out of hand. At 7.1% it’s strong, but encouraging. So encouraging, in fact, that the Nya Carnegie crew threw a brewery-themed Feats of Strength contest to welcome the new beer.
We’ll pass the mic here to our man Steve Dippel:
On the day dedicated to celebrating all things Hammarby Sjöstad, we challenged the village’s fine citizens to a compete in a series of brewery-related feats of strength. Nine brave souls, men and women, heeded the call, and we had ourselves a good old fashioned strongman/woman contest. First up was the daunting food truck pull. Contestants had two minutes to pull the Nya Carnegie mobile gastro pub as far as they could up a slight incline in front of the brewery. The mighty Aron “Cato” Vingren (a part-time strongman) prevailed, pulling the truck 23,5 meters, awing all bystanders.
Next up was the Microstar keg loading race, where contestants lifted, ran with and loaded three 70 kg or 50 kg kegs for time. Here, our very own Ebrima from the kitchen showed true grit, outperforming all others in the amateur class.
Last but not least, the overhead press with sacks of malt was underway. Our own Rasmus, after initially struggling with the proper technique, proceeded to put on a clinic in the malt sack military press (total of 60 kg) – completing 15 reps in the allotted two minutes. No injuries and a good time was had by all.
You can’t deny the Nya Carnegie crew knows how to party hard, and party weird. We salute the new Fridens Ale, and thank the team for lending us the plausible deniability of not asking us to participate in the strength contest.
