In the 1800s, much of the Williamsburg, Brooklyn neighborhood we now occupy was heavily industrial. Of the many factories and workshops, one of the most impressive was the Hecla Iron Works complex. Streams of workers toiled to create some of the finest iron available, eventually contributing to the construction projects ranging from the 155th Street Aqueduct to Grand Central Station. Hecla products were essential for New York City’s growth, and the stamp is still visible in all sorts of surprising nooks across the city.

Today, we use the former Hecla Iron Works buildings as our Brooklyn office, brewery, and warehouse. The quality is undeniable: the bones of the building have been basically unchanged since its construction in 1896, surviving through life as a textile mill, storage, and a matzoh factory (yes, really.) It seemed only fitting that we pay tribute to our sturdy home with our newest beer: Hecla Iron Ale.

Hecla Iron Ale was a guest of honor at our 2015 Holiday Party.

After plenty of time spent forging together rugged roasted malts and resilient, earthy hops, we’re proud to release Hecla Iron Ale as our tribute to one of the greatest manufacturers in New York City history. Despite the dark chocolate aroma and ebony body, Hecla Iron Ale is remarkably dry and refreshing. It’s a prime candidate for parties as well– our company-wide Holiday Party in December served as a very (very, very) enthusiastic welcome for our newest session ale.

Hecla Iron Ale is hitting shelves this month around the world, starting with our friends in Sweden. American beer drinkers will have to wait a bit longer, but you can always visit us in Brooklyn and drink it in view of its namesake building. It’s just like visiting a museum, but with more beer.
