Noted Brooklynite, director and Knicks fan Spike Lee and his agency SPIKE DDB released a video last week simply titled “SPIKE DDB BROOKLYN MADE.” It shows Brooklyn business owners of all stripes– including our Co-founder and Chairman Steve Hindy and Brewmaster Garrett Oliver– discussing what it means to be rooted in our borough.
This is far from the first time Steve has met with Spike Lee on a project. He told us the first time was in the earliest days of the company:
In 1989, our second year in business, Spike Lee surprised us by putting Brooklyn lager in a funny scene in his first big hit, “Do The Right Thing.” It’s the scene where Ossie Davis goes into a deli and complains they don’t have Miller High Life beer. We volunteered to donate Brooklyn Lager to some of Spike’s opening parties. It was thrilling to be at parties with Spike and the cast and the guys from Public Enemy. It was a relief from the daily grind of selling a craft beer in Brooklyn long before people knew what craft beer was. We felt we were part of something new and exciting in Brooklyn.
