IBM’s Watson computer system, which you may remember from the decidedly one-sided man vs. machine Jeopardy! series when it was first unveiled, is now trying its hand as a psychoanalyst. Personality Insights takes sample text and returns a “spectrum of cognitive and social characteristics.” With Watson Analyzes This, we see what Watson has to say about our beers from their Beers Page description, then run our own, human-powered analysis of its work.

On The Couch: Sorachi Ace Saison
Favorite Hot Sauce: Crystal (yes, we know what you’re thinking)
Dream Vacation: Anywhere with a beach and a good food scene
Favorite TV Show: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Watson Says:
You are shrewd, somewhat critical and explosive. You are philosophical: you are open to and intrigued by new ideas and love to explore them. You are authority-challenging: you prefer to challenge authority and traditional values to help bring about positive changes. And you are organized: you feel a strong need for structure in your life.
You are motivated to seek out experiences that provide a strong feeling of discovery. You are relatively unconcerned with both tradition and helping others. You care more about making your own path than following what others have done. And you think people can handle their own business without interference.
Dr. Rozmus Says:
My dear Watson, I’m afraid the current political climate has affected even you! So much of this analysis is very accurate. “Shrewd, somewhat critical, and explosive”– right off the bat I can feel Sorachi Ace Saison’s knife-edge balance and crackling dry finish. And as for explosive, well, don’t shake the 750ml bottles unless you’ve won a sizable trophy to celebrate first.
Authority challenging, adventure seeking, and all that are right on. But what’s this about not caring about helping others? It’s a beer first and foremost, Watson. Beer is for everyone, period. Where would we be if beer suddenly starting giving us the cold shoulder? Not karaoke night, I can assure you of that.
Still, an admirable performance, my friend. I can only hope some Sorachi can lift your spirits.
